FA II

Harpers Tale - Leywen - Tuesday, February 05, 2002, 10:09 PM
------------------------------------------------------------

You go to the Classroom.

Classroom
Glows bright the room immensely as they highlight the many hides hanging around the room. Tables and chairs are arranged neatly so that the instructors can teach from almost any place in the room, slate boards decorating the entire northern wall. Herbs and spices fill the room with a pleasing aroma, as shelves are covered with hides, scrolls, herbs, and all manners of teaching aids. A small hearth is here, mainly used for demonstrations although there is a pot of klah warming on it, brought over from the hold's kitchens by the apprentices daily.
You see Healer Interview Board, Healer Board, Tray1, Narali's Herbal, Infirmary patient, Tray4, Tray5, Tray2, and Ripple here.
Sabine, Aerrin, Fareia, Jassay, Magen, and N'ano are here.
Obvious exits:
Records Room Healer Center

Magen smiles and nods to Master Aerrin, and takes a seat in a near by chair.
Sabine is busy arranging her notebook and other acrouments of learning, but looks up and smiles a little uncertainly as people file in for the class. Planted in the front row, she appears eager to learn.

Jassay makes her way in and offers a nod to the master before finding herself a seat somewhere near the front. Her ever present jacket is settled on the chair and her notebook is set down before her fulll attention is turned forward.

Leywen slips quietly into the classroom, glancing around at the others gathered here, then takes a seat near the back, digging out her notebook from an overstuffed carrypack.

Fareia wanders into the room, in a surprisingly thoughtful mood, thinking about everything from how everyone is a little bit psycho to what to do with old candidate robes. A slight wave goes to Aerrin and all the other apprentices as she plops down in a chair, pulling her notebook from her ever faithful shoulder bag and flipping to a nice clean page. Wow, how apprentice-like.

N'ano squeezes right in with the rest of them. Innocent whistle? Nah. He's deprived of his healer lessons since his training with Saria was put on halt while there were weyrlings around. But that's not the point. He's come back to the hall to torment Aerrin, of course! With a nice front row seat, too!

Aerrin is, amazingly enough, Kurrin-free at the moment. All these poor deprived apprentices will have to track the healer down some other time if they want to coo and fawn appropriately. Easy way for brownie points. Aerrin smiles, nodding perpetually as the apprentices file in. As N'ano takes a seat, she slides from her perch atop the large desk to hover over him in the front row, brows lifted. "Well.. this is something of a surprise. Miss us that much, did you?" At least her tone is lighthearted and teasing - from this Healer, such words are usually good natured.

Sabine watches the Master make her way over to the older man and cranes her neck to see what's going on. Curiosity may have killed the feline, but the answer brought it back.

Fareia stares at the back of N'ano's head. What is /he/ doing here? Oh, Farie hasn't forgotten him. It's hard to forget the person who made you run laps around the bowl and forced chores on you for well near a turn. Stylus is whipped out of her bag before it is placed on the floor and set primly atop her notebook, waiting to be picked up for something to write down.

N'ano
Observant, aren't we? A look at this young man would conclude his stance at roughly six feet in height. Dusky hair, closely resembling a near-ebon hue, rests upon his head short-cropped, though the top is layered very shag-like with its longer frosted blonde tips. Genial cerulean eyes cast illumination in a provocative way with the deep sincerity that they possess, contributing to his appealing guise 'neath darkened brows. Any quirk in his mouth will reveal a pair of dimples within his facial structure, almost giving him a juvenile demeanor. Time spent in the brilliance of day performing life's duties has metamorphosed his skin's tonicity to that of a deep golden hue as it stretches over his frame, quite uniform throughout. Broad shoulders enhance his upper body's muscularity--apparent enough that he's nay from being lanky in this portion, quite a contrast from his legs, however still gangly from adolescence.
Around his forehead in a bandana, wrapped together to form a belt-width band, tight tightly in the back. Fashion statement? Maybe. Sweat collector? Maybe. The world may never know.
A word that might fit his attire well is prim, a long-sleeved cromcoal shirt tucked into belted cargo trousers of the same dimness, both loose fitting yet a perfect fit at the same time and containing multiple pockets along the sides for Faranth knows what. Sleeves of said shirt are kept in a roll half way up his forearm whereas trous bunch slightly at their ends, obscuring the rise of shiny riding boots, newly obtained and well kept. Having found a liking for a particular scent, he bears it--not too strong, not too light, but just right. Perched on N'ano's shoulder is Maverick.
He is awake, but has been staring off into space for 2 minutes.
N'ano is 22 Turns, 10 months, and 10 days old.
N'ano has no apparent threadscoring.

Jassay doesn't recognize the rider, then she's hardly at the hall even. The girl just shrugs it off and pulls out her writing impliments so that she may take notes when need be.

While looking around the classroom at the other apprentices, Magen takes out her notebook, and stylus. Scribing 'First Aid II' at the top of the scroll. Smiling at Master Aerrin's teasing with N'ano. With hands folden neatly on top, she watches the rest of the class, settle in.

Leywen leans back in her chair, crossing one leg over the other, her eyes (mostly) trained on Aerrin, though the wander toward the boys every now and then, her smile slowly spreading on her face.

N'ano just beams... and nods his head. "Yep! Of /course/! I mean... it's been ages, hasn't it?" Only about 5 turns, really... something in that arena. "Heard you were teachin' first aid today, eh? One of my favorite classes, of course... thought I'd stop on by for a refresher," he grins. He could pass for an apprentice, right? Surely he's not /that/ much older than the rest of them.

Aerrin grins, head shaking a fraction as she corrects. "First aid two.. and I'll believe it's one of your favorite courses if you're still awake at the end," she teases before backing up a bit and surveying the class. "I hope you're all aware that you're here for the second half of First Aid - where we'll deal with more serious injuries than the first half did. Who can give me some idea of what those might me?"

Jassay offers a slight nod as she scribbles down a title at the top of her page then sets the stylus down and leans back, she is lisenting, honest.

Fareia crosses her ankles and leans forward, a sinister smile crawling over her face. Maybe they'll be able to use the rider as a test subject. Hand rises slowly at the question as she considers the answer. Hm...What were those injuries in first aid one, again?

Back to his old routine, of course. N'ano's hand waves about in the air like a good little student. He's got a few good answers, of course.

Sabine raises her hand tenatively. As she's not quite sure what was covered in First Aid One, she's not sure what is more serious than it. But hey, she's willing to take a shot.

Aerrin nods swiftly. "Fareia, and then Sabine, please." N'ano is eyed, but ignored.

"Broken bones?" Leywen asks, her eyes coming back to the teacher, while her pencil jots down a few words on her notepad. Forgetting all about good conduct, she goes on, saying, "Drowing?"

Jassay offers a slight headshake, she could come up with a few answers, well, one anyway, and it's been said anyway. So she just listens intently to the class.

Magen decides to let Fareia and Sabine, have a go at it. Nodding at Leywen's answer, then turning to the other two apprentices.

N'ano hesitantly lowers his arm, wrinkling his nose in the meanwhile as settles back in his chair. Broken bones are fun to play with and if they're even thinking about using him as a demo, er... no. Not gonna happen.

Fareia opens her mouth to answer then shoots a half glare at Leywen. /She/ was going to say that. Oh well. "Uh..Yeah. Broken bones?"

Sabine shrinks down slightly at the mention of broken bones, but decides to risk an answer anyways, "Bad burns, compound fractures, maybe eating something really poison?"

Aerrin nods slowly. "Broken bones, yes.. though you should have covered the basics of those in your first FA class..." An amused smile spreads as she fixes her gaze on Leywen. "I don't think there's much we can do for anyone one they've actually /drowned/, but yes, we'll talk about some problems that can pop up due to sudden submersion or water-logged lungs." Now her gaze goes to Sabine expectantly, and her head bobs as the apprentice answers. "Poison, yes... thank you, apprentices. You covered most of the key points. One no one mentioned, though, is a puncture wound.. does anyone know what this is?"

Jassay does some thinking, she didn't intend on being the silent one in this class. After a bit more thinking she raises her hand, having a thought, though it may very well not be right.

Sabine bites at her lip and shakes her head, blushing a little. She could guess, but she's done her guessing for the moment.

Fareia finally picks up her stylus and carefully writes down 'puncture wounds'. She taps the end of the stylus on her notebook before hesitantly raising her hand again. Ouch punture wound. Painful experience, most likely, though Farie's never gotten one, thank goodness.

Aerrin lifts a finger to indicate Jassay quickly. "Go ahead.."

Jassay shifts slightly. "Wouldn't a puncture wound be when one get's stuck by a something like a thorn or needle?" She offers, definatly not certain on her answer.

Magen makes notations in her notebook. Impaled objects? Tunnelsnake bites?

Leywen grins, her pencil jotting down a few more words, while she glances across the room at N'ano, then back at Aerrin. Still not able to hold her tongue, she mutters, "puncture wounds," to herself, then says a little louder "Getting cut by a knife or something sharp?"

Aerrin nods swiftly. "Exactly like.. glass and knives can also be big problems. They can cause a good deal of damage, if they hit in the wrong area, and can bleed rather badly. Now, since this is first aid, we're assuming that we are /not/ in an infirmary when we begin to treat these.. so does anyone know what our first step to dealing with, say, a nasty shard of glass sticking out of someone's hand, would be?" Leywen is fixed with a cool gaze from the Master, and brows lift slightly, though she doesn't respond to her answer.

Sabine raises her hand quickly and does the 'call on me' dance while trying to take notes at the same time. Which takes a little more coordination than she presently possesses.

Fareia silently drums her fingers for a moment then lifts her hand in the air again. Talkative today, Farie? Maybe she's just feeling rarely smart.

Aerrin always responds to the 'call on me' dance. Of course. "Sabine?" she questions before nodding toward Fareia. "And then Fariea. Don't worry if your answers overlap."

Jassay offers a quicke glane towards Sabine and Farie, though she keeps her hand down. Her Stylus is poised and ready to continue the taking of notes as soon as answers are given.

Leywen doesn't quite notice the Master's stare at first, but a eerie feeling makes her look up to see it. Swallowing a lump, she attemps a half-grin, then slowly raises her hand, while taking down notes about 'puncture wounds'.

Sabine pauses for a moment before answering, "Getting the glass out so they don't cut themselves further?" She really hopes she's right after the spectacle she made.

Fareia nods slowly, taps her stylus a couple times then answers, herself. "Stop the bleeding, first and /then/ take the glass out," is Farie's guess. A hopeful look in Aerrin's direction. Is she right? Hm?

Aerrin grins, head shaking as she leans slowly against the big desk behind her, hands settling on the edge for support. "Suprisingly, no. That's what you /don't/ want to do.. not until you're in an infirmary. Instead you want to yes, stop the bleeding. Then you want to secure the object, making sure that it won't move on the trip by wrapping it carefully in as clean a bandage as you can manage. Once you're in the infirmary, you can /carefully/ take the object out, then clean the wound. Likely, a puncture wound will nead stitching, then pack it with mosstea like any other injury and bandage it." She grins for a moment. "Though you might want to numbweed it at some point, too. Any questions on that?"

Jassay nods and scribbles that down. With the question about questions Jass shakes her head and looks about the classs, no, not all at once.

Sabine screws her face up in displeasure and sinks down even farther. She scribbles out the notes and carefully doesn't look in anyone's direction. At Aerrin's question she faintly shakes her head and stares straight ahead.

Fareia shakes her head, scribbling all this down as the master talks. No, seems simple enough. Stop bleeding, remove object, stitch, and bandage.Simple enough, really. More simple than other things.

Leywen lowers her hand, her expression becoming a bit sulking. She /was/ going to say something about pressure, or the like. Shaking her head no to the Master's inquiry, she jots down the information given. "What if there's nothing clean to use as a bandage?" she ask, surprising herself, by blurting out a question, though she'd decided against it.

Magen makes notations...Help the person remain calm, dress the wound around the glass, to control the bleeding, until a healer arrives. If that isn't possible, then access the injury. How serious the injury is. If serious bleeding, removal of the glass might have to wait until the person can get to an infirmary. Cleaning of the wound, possible stitching. Numbweed would be appreciated, probably...

Aerrin nods toward Leywen, cool gaze giving way to an interested one. "Good question. The answer is that, as in most sorts of First Aid, you simply have to make do with what you can. You may have to sacrifice a bit of your shirt or skirt to bind it.. and it may not be terribly clean. Which is why it's important to get them to an infirmary and the wound cleaned as quickly as possible. It's also why every /good/ healer really should have a kit with them at all times - bandages would be in it, as would redwort and numbweed. Now. Let's move on to something that was mentioned earlier.. broken bones. What do you do when, say, a broken bone has pierced the skin. Anyone?"

Sabine raises her arm halfway, not really sure that she wants to be called on. Her other hand continues to record the Masters words.

N'ano's favorite part... so naturally, his hand raises into the air as he holds back an answer... if the others don't get it, anyway.

Jassay hrms and has no answer to this question. So she is curious and listens just as any curious person would.

Aerrin eyes N'ano for a moment before an amused grin makes its appearance and she nods. "N'ano? Let's see what you remember."

Fareia shudders slightly. Ewww. Open fractures. Yet her hand still raises, halfway like Sabine's. Numbweed is your friend when there's a bone sticking from your skin?

Leywen glances down her outfit, a slight grimace crossing her face at the thought of having to tear it to make for a bandage. 'Make a kit!' she notes in her book, then looks up again, eyes moving to look at N'ano, one eyebrow raised in anticipation of his answer.

N'ano beams! That's him being called on! "Oh... let's see... well, you have to set it, of course! I think that was the first step, wasn't it?" he asks, quirking a brow. He's on the right track, anyway, if he remembers.

Aerrin lifts her brow, head shaking slowly. "I do hope there's something you'd do /before/ that. Anyone? You have a bone protruding from the skin, here.. what's your first step?"

Jassay raises her hand slightly, having an idea. Pain, there'd be pain, right.....

Sabine raises her hand a little higher, maybe she knows this one.

"Clean the wound?" Leywen offers, again forgetting to raise her hand, though her eyebrow is /still/ raised. Good enough, isn't it?

Fareia just leaves her hand where it is. Eh...Not sure. But it sounds like it hurts no matter /what/ you do first.

Hey, like he said, it's been a while... that's why N'ano's here, right? For a refresher, of course. "You gotta scream a little first too, of course!" he just adds as a side note, grinning.

"We're raising hands, apprentice," Aerrin reminds easily - but thankfully, her days of getting riled over an appretentices lack of rule following have mostly passed - now she simply assigns chores. Thank Faranth Cayl left the Hall. "But yes, you /do/ want to clean it. It could be /very/ dangerous to pull that back in if it's not clean. And you do need to pull it back in. Carefully. You don't want to injure the muscles and tissues anymore on the way in then you did on the way out! Once that's done, you may set it and, if neccessary, stitch it, pack it, bandage it, and splint it. Any questions on this?"

Magen makes further notes...If you're lucky enough, to have your first aid kit, wash your hands and the opening in the skin, with redwort. Coat the area thoroughly with numbweed and proceed to set the bone. Wrap the wound, and attach splints, with anything you can find nearby, like tree branches. Even tightly rolled up fabric can be turned into a splint. But if there is no kit, there's no redwort, no numbweed. Set the bone, bandage the wound, and attach splints. And hope you're still friends, in the morning!

Jassay lowers her hand and jots that down before shaking her head. Nope, no questions on her behalf.

Sabine writes as fast as she can, clean pull carefully, set, stich , bandage, splint. Keep as clean as you can. As she writes she pulls herself upward in her chair until she is sitting fully upright again.

Fareia writes this all down then pauses for a moment and doesn't bother to raise her hand for the question. "How do you know if the bone is back in place?" You wouldn't want a patient with a crooked bone, now would you?

"Right... Raising hands," Leywen mutters, making a note of that in her, well, notebook. Pouting for a bit, she tilts her head sideways, grabbing hold of a thin braid to play with, while the other apprentices raises their hands and waits to be called on. She'll just sit here and not answer any more questions.

Aerrin tsks softly, brows raising at Fareia. "Now that you /should/ have had in your first FA.. anyone know?"

Sabine raises and then lowers her hand a few times, before deciding to keep it down. She thinks she knows the answers but she's not quite ready to go out on a limb to give it.

Fareia ohs softly, trying to remember everything from her FA1 class. Well...it might've been different with different kinds of fractures, right? Heh/

Jassay errs at not remembering this, it's right in the back of her mind, somewhere back there, but where...

Leywen is playing with her braid. Can't you tell? Eyes go flying back to N'ano, a smile offered to him as she winks, then returns her attention shortly back to the teacher to give a non-committal shrug.

"Noone?" Aerrin questions with a disappointed shake of her head. "All right, then.. for the most part, you'll be able to feel it slide into place. You can also feel gently along the bone to see if you can feel anymore protrusions. You can't always tell /for sure/, but for the most part, bones like to go back where they belong." She smiles slowly. "You just have to convince them of that. Now. Let's use a hypothetical situation. You're walking along the beach and you see a person - N'ano! - lying, motionless, near the water's edge." Her lips curl upward as she fixes the rider with a grin. "What do you do?"

Sabine shoots a hand straight up into the air. She's got to get a least one answer right, maybe this will be the one.

Jassay grimaces at having forgotten that, though she does raise her hand at this one. She might have an answer to this one.

Aerrin nods. "Sabine, go ahead, then Jassay."

Leywen grins crookedly, her eyes coming to look at N'ano again, a sparkle crossing them. "Try'n wake him?" she notes, her voice teasing as she winks at him again.

Fareia raises a hand carefully at that one, still with no idea about what she'd say.

N'ano won't do anything, of course, since he's apparently the victim. Oif. Snorting, he does manage a laugh "Is this a result of a drunken escapade or my woman dumpin' me?" he asks, raising a brow, shaking his head... amused, if anything.

Sabine takes a deep breath before speaking in a rush, "Check to see if he's breathing, if he's not than you tilt his head back and clear his airway and breath for him and do chest compressions and all that." Yes ladies and gents, all in one breath that was. She looks expectantly at Aerrin for conformation.

Magen nods at Fareia...a good question. Listening to Aerrin's answer, she adds...Check out the bones by feel, with your hands. The patient will experience severe pain unless the area is doused with numbweed...to her notebook. Then adds...possible drowning...?, with an underlining mark.

Fareia chuckles slightly at N'ano,"Both. You got dumped and decided to get drunk."

Jassay nods. "Go and see if he's alright," she offers. "Then what Sabine said, as well as checking for any injuries."

Magen chuckles softly at Fareia's teasing. Good answer from Sabine, and she continues scribing...

Aerrin deals first with Leywen, who is given another look. "If I have to mention it again," she intones softly, "I will have to ask you to see me after class. Please raise your hands like the others." Who seem to be learning from her bad example, and who also get a stern look before Aerrin shakes her head. "Actually, funny as he's attempting to be.. N'ano actually has the right idea. You don't know /what's/ wrong with him.. he may just be taking a nap. He may not be breathing. You need to assess the situation, as Sabine says.. check to see if he's breathing, if he has any injuries, if he can be woken... let's go with Sabine's idea, though. If he's not breathing then yes, exactly. Clear his airway, and then begin breaths. You do /not/ need to do chest compressions unless there is no pulse, as well. If they have a pulse, you only need to concentrate on the breathing, and you can do this at a normal rate until their breathing starts again...if they have no pulse, however, you do need to begin compressions. The point of this is to keep blood pumping and to jumpstart the heart. When you begin compressions, you want to be sure your hands are positioned correctly. Your hands go on the sternum, at the base of the ribs." She points, showing them the spot. "Too high or too low and you could break some bones." She pauses, grinning. "Of course, it's better to have a broken bone or two than to have a heart that's not beating."

Sabine sits forward and speed writes as fast as she can, with a wide grin on her face for finally getting one right. She knew she could do it.

Fareia nods, scribbling fiercely to get this all down. Well, maybe we can just hope that Farie doesn't trip across anyone lying unconcious near the water.

Fine! She will just say nothing, then. Brow knotting, Leywen attempts to be stubborn, and not say anything for the rest of the class, and leans in over her notebook, taking down the information given by the Master. Let's just see how long she can hold her tongue, eh?

Magen wonders...picture Fareia flipping N'ano over onto his back, then straddling...chest thrusts....*coughs* shaking the image from her mind.

"You're not gonna make me act as a dummy for the class, are ya?" You know.., the demo dummy, that is. N'ano's a smart kid, really. "'cause I mean, if you need someone for CPR practice..." he trails off, grinning now.

Aerrin continues, pausing only to clear her throat softly. Hard work, this lecturing. "For adults, you need to push down about one and a half or two inches at the rate of 80 to 100 compressions a minute. For children, push about one and a half to one inches at the rate of 100 per minute, and for infants, one half to one fourth inch at 100 compressions per minute. When you perform CPR on infants, you should use only one or two fingers instead of your entire hand, and for children use only one hand." She stops, head tilting toward N'ano as she eyes him contemplatively. "Well.. they /could/ use the practice," she points out. And she's sure that N'ano would /hate/ all those girls doing mouth to mouth on him.

N'ano wouldn't, but Hyti probably would if she walked in. But anything to help others... "Well, if you really want me to," he grins, motioning towards the floor "I'd love to be of assistance."

Sabine feels her face blush bright red at the banter between N'ano and Aerrin. There is no way that she is going to be practicing CPR on a wide awake man. No way! She attempts to hide behind her notebook, hoping that no one sees her.

"What /does/ CPR mean?!" Leywen blurts out, after noting the appropriate numbers and statistics. Grimacing at breaking her oath to remain silent, she mutters something to herself under her breath, an angry look crossing her face. Maybe she should borrow some sutures and sew her mouth shut.

Magen stifles a giggle, clasping her hand over her mouth. "Hey, Lance Romance!" Looking at Leywen hiding behind her notebook...

Fareia winces slightly. Performing CPR on N'ano? Shudder. I don't think so. Someone get Hyti down here to stop all this insanity. "Cardiopulmonary resuscitation," she says quietly in response to Leywen.

Aerrin blinks, surprised enough by the question that she doesn't bother to address the way in which it was asked. "Oh.. sorry. CPR - cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Now. Do I have a volunteer?" She beams at the class in general, waiting.

Magen shakes her head, no. Laughing at the other apprentices, while adding more to her notebook.

Sabine begins to regret sitting up front as she sinks as low in her chair as she can, notebook in front of her stricken face. They're actually going to make her do this! She didn't know she was signing up for CPRing N'ano when she came here!

Writing down the answer to her question, Leywen underlines it with two thick marks, then looks up with a raised eyebrown. Volunteer for /what/, she wonders, leaning somewhat further back in her chair in an attempt of becoming invisible. Not here. Not me. Not a volunteer.

Fareia glances frantically around, trying to find someone to land her gaze on. Hm...Maybe she'll stare at...Sabine. Farie will volunteer the /other/ apprentice to do this. Not her. Someone /else/.

Aerrin laughs suddenly, head shaking as she lifts a hand in dismissal. "Honestly, folks. I thought there'd be more excitement about getting to kiss a bronzerider. But no worries - we have dummies for that. Now. Who can tell me what hypothermia is?"

N'ano shakes his head at Aerrin "It's not kissin'... it's CPR. There's a difference, y'know... one would get me into trouble, and the other would save m'life," he grins, raising his hand for the latter.

Sabine lets out a big sigh of relief and sits back up in her chair, putting her notebook in front of her as the red fades from her face. Her hand is raised again, and a pleased look is on her face. Training back home has really paid off here, who'd have thunk it?

Fareia giggles slightly, at the end of the sudden panic of everyone. N'ano's skeeery? At the next question she raises her hand.

Leywen isn't trying to hide anymore. Not with the statement from the Master. Her eyes wander over at N'ano again, and she grins crookedly, then raises a hand, while tilting her head. "I'll volunteer," she says sweetly, a wink offered at the rider.

Magen scribes...Hypothermia...a condition that N'ano will end up with, if Hyti catches him practicing CPR on anyone other than her...a fine line between kissin' and CPR...

Aerrin grins, head shaking at Leywen. "Too late, sorry. You'll have to corner him in a hall for practice now. And since N'ano has so graciously volunteered.. care to tell them what hypothermia is?"

Jassay continues her note scribbling before glancing upwards towards N'ano, awaiting the answer to the masters question.

Sabine finally takes a good look at N'ano as she waits to hear the answer that she already knows.

"Aye--when you're body's kinda goin' into shock--sorta, 'cause it's temperature has been lowered dramatically--like from fallin' into cold water for a long while... somethin' like that."
says N'ano...

Leywen is near to sticking her tongue out, then remembers Aerrin's rank and bites it instead, her arms crossing over her chest, only to be un-crossed to write down Important Information.

Aerrin grins and nods swiftly. "Indeed it is." Good thing she's not looking toward Leywen.. just in case the apprentice should slip up. Her temper can't be held in check /forever/, y'know. "Symptoms of hypothermia include shaking, weakness, loss of coordination, trouble performing simple tasks, a loss of consciousness, and difficulty or absence of breathing and/or heartbeat... now. Given that.. what do you think you should do to treat Hypothermia?"

Jassay writes and raises her hand all at once. Interesting topic.

Sabine rolls her eyes a little at the easy answer to that question and raises her hand with just the teeniest hint of cockiness.

Fareia ums softly to herself then raises her hand, glancing at Leywen and grinning before turning her attention back to the master.

"Jassay?" Aerrin questions. "And then Fareia."

Leywen grinds her teeth in order to not blurt out anything more. Wouldn't want to be kept after class, when she had to catch a dragon-ride back to the Reaches. Can't keep a rider waiting, now could she? Writing down her own idea of the answer in her notebook, she glances around at the other apprentices, hoping /their/ ideas are the same as hers.

Jassay nods, returing her hand to it's proper position. "Try to warm them up," she notes, "but not suddenly," is hastily added to that statement.

Fareia nods slowly,"Yeah...Give them a warm blanket and get them dry if they're wet?"

Sabine nods at the other apprentices answers, that's just what she would have said.

Aerrin grins toward Jassay. "Actually, you do want to do it as quickly as possible.. Blankets, fires.. even shared body heat can be useful in emergency situations. Also - hypothermia is often caused by a sudden immersion in cold water, so you also need to get them dry. You need to avoid damp, wet, or cold environments. And avoid stimulants - which means no klah or wine!"

Sabine raises her hand at the last statement by Aerrin.

Jassay nods, writing all of that down. A frown is offered at the statement of now klah and an 'Aww,' is ellicited.

Which means N'ano would probably be dead 'cause he lives on that stuff. Oh shards.

"So you'd also need to get the wet clothes off, then?" Leywen says, pinching her own forearm. Didn't last long, did it? Her wow of absolute silence. Poor appy just /can't/ keep her mouth shut. Or remember to raise her hand.

Fareia just writes things down. Scribblescribble. Take note, take note.

Aerrin nods toward Leywen with a frown. "Yes, you would. And you need to see me after class, please."

Jassay more scribbling occurs as she chuckles softly, no klah or wine, impossible.

"But...." No. Better not go on down that road, Leywen, dear. Nodding slowly, the apprentice, looks down at the table in front of her, pencil making doodles in her notebook. Ri'k would just have to wait. At least he was one of the /nicer/ riders.

Magen notes...Snuggle, cuddle for body warmth, instead of stimulants...*hey snuggles, cuddles are stimulants..wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Sabine waves her hand in the air a little, partly to divert the Master's attention from the other apprentice.

Aerrin moves on without missing a beat. "Poisonings. Rather common, especially among kidlets. Poisonings can be caused by poisonous substances or large doses of normally harmless things. Symptoms can vary depending on the substance, but the most common ones include nausea, stomach pain, cramps, drowsiness and/or loss of consciousness, burns around the mouth or hands, convulsions, and shallow breathing. Empty containers or bottle, or plant matter on or around the person can indicate what the substance was."

Fareia grins at Leywen, holding in her own comment and snort of laughter as she just continues to try and pay attention and take notes. Scribblescribble.

Jassay nods slightly at this statement as the light etching of her stylus can be heard getting various notes down into her notebook.

Sabine practically lifts herself out of her chair with the hand raising. She has questions! Not huge ones, but questions.

"Poisonings," Leywen mentions under her breath, low enough for the Master /not/ to hear. Noting the symptoms and such, she nods to herself, her eyes moving slightly to each side seeing other apprentices looking at /her/. Not her fault she couldn't hold back her answers. Is it?

Magen scribes 'Poison', and underlines the heading. Adding the Masters definition. Scribers cramp is begining to set in...this has been a very informative class.

Aerrin continues easily, gaze moving across the class in watchfullness. To treat poisonings, give large amounts of water, and be sure to keep them awake and alert. Sometimes vomiting must be induced, but only if you are sure what the substance is and that it will not harm them coming back up. Lots of bread will help to absorb the poison if it is a chemical. Also - be sure to preserve any poison without contaminating yourself if it is possible - this will help determine the treatment."

Jassay noddles yet again, as per usual, and shakes her hand out slightly before she returns to writing out the definitions and notes given to them.

Sabine dramatically drops her arm with a sigh and goes to write things down. As she writes she mutters to herself under her breath, carefully lowering the level so that Aerrin can't hear her.

Fareia stifles a yawn as she writes, continually messier and slower. This class can get pleasantly boring.

'Water, vomiting and bread,' goes into Leywen's notebook, along with explanations of each keyword. Jaw moving, she repeats the words of the Master to herself, without saying them outloud, though. No more saying things without raising your hand, right. Don't forget now.

Aerrin slows and.. stops! Wonder of wonders! Leaning back against the desk again, her gaze wanders over the apprentices. "Questions?" Could it be? Have they reached the end?

N'ano is still alert, nonetheless. He has a point to make! Y'know... that this is his favorite class, of course. However, eyes do unfocus for a brief moment as he's given a reminder from his lifemate. As Aerrin speaks again, he blinks once, widens his eyes, and shakes his head.

Fareia slowly, hopefully glances up at Aerrin and shakes her head. Is it? Could it be? Let's hope.

Sabine grumbles to herself still. Now she wants to take questions. Well, she wont ask any, not one. She leans back a bit petulantly and shakes her head.

Jassay shakes her head slightly. No, she has no questions. Having done that she listens to her mind going 'let this be the end,' over and over again.

Leywen shakes her head no. She didn't have any questions, did she? Looking over her notes again, she takes hold of a braid, twisting it around her finger, while furrowing her brow, trying to come up with something to ask. "No..." she finally mutters after a long moment of thought.

Magen chuckles at the surrounding apprentices. They are mouldable. Just not all in one afternoon. Shaking her head, no. No questions at this time...

Aerrin nods shortly. "Then you are all dismissed.. thank you, class. And Leywen, please see me." With that, Aerrin turns to the task of gathering hides from the desk, back to the apprentices.

Jassay offers a small sigh and picks up her notebook and jacket. A nod is given towards Master Aerrin before she makes her way out.

Sabine gathers her notebook and stylus together muttering something about needing a carryall, and with a quick dip to the Master she leaves the room.

Sabine walks to the Healer Center.
Fareia goes home.
Jassay walks to the Healer Center.

N'ano stands up abruptly from his seat, giving a chin-nod to the group in general "Nice seein' ya'll 'gain... but I've got to get back to the Weyr--got practice thread to lead for the 'lings. Till next time!" With that, he gives a salute-like wave, and heads out.
N'ano walks nonchalantly to the Healer Center.

Closing her notebook, Magen puts it away in her carrysack, along with her stylus. Standing up, and after brushing away the wrinkles from her tunic, she walks up to the healer. With a curtsy, she thanks Master Aerrin, for the FA2 class, and heads back to the healer lounge...
Magen walks to the Healer Center.

Leywen closes up her notebook, putting it and her pencil into her pack, then sits to watch the rest of the apprentices file out of the classroom. Bye, bye. Hope to see you all again someday. If she's not going to be expelled or worse by Aerrin.

You click your heels three times.
